1 in 3 people in Malawi don’t have clean water.
More than 3,100 children under 5 die every year.
Malawi is a densely populated country.
The Malawi Water Crisis is a multifaceted problem linked to natural disasters.
The lack of clean water contributes to a variety of health problems and causes thousands of fatalities each year.
Malawi is one of Africa’s most densely populated and least developed countries, with the majority of its population residing in rural areas where water is scarce. Consequently, many women and children spend significant portions of their day walking to collect water.
Children in Malawi face a high risk of malnutrition and water-related diseases before they reach the age of five. Access to clean drinking water and improved sanitation can significantly mitigate these risks.
One Humanity Foundation’s water and sanitation projects in Malawi aim to provide safe and clean water by constructing boreholes in rural areas throughout the country. On average, a borehole can benefit up to 150-200 families, serving them four times a day, depending on the location.
In a recent project, we constructed a borehole for a village where residents previously walked over 30 minutes several times a day to collect water from a shallow well in a rock. Alhamdulillah, with the new borehole, the villagers now have access to clean and safe drinking water near their homes. The water is used by the community for drinking, cooking, washing, and for their livestock and irrigation.
In Malawi, the responsibility of collecting water primarily falls on children and women. However, with nearby boreholes, they only need to carry water a short distance. This saves time, allowing children to attend school and women to better care for their families and livelihoods.
The Messenger of Allah (saw) was asked, “Which charity is best?” He replied, “[Providing] water”’. [Abu Dawud]
